High-Voltage Grid · Belgium

The high-voltage transmission grid carries electrical power from generation sites — nuclear, gas, wind, solar, interconnectors — to substations across the country at voltages of 33 kV and above (in Belgium, up to 380 kV on Elia's backbone). It's the country's electrical skeleton, distinct from the lower-voltage distribution networks that step power down to homes and businesses.

What's on the map

Three static layers, pulled in at build time and rendered client-side on a MapLibre GL map with a Protomaps PMTiles basemap, plus an ambient breath on the hubs and two dynamic highlights driven by the tables above.

HV lines and cables static
Every OpenStreetMap feature in Belgium with power IN ('line', 'cable') and a voltage ≥ 33 kV. Where voltage is concatenated (e.g. 220000;150000), the highest value drives the styling.
HV substations static
The OSM polygon features tagged power=substation and meeting the same voltage threshold. Roughly Elia's substation footprint, plus a long tail of installations owned by other operators (DSOs, industrial sites, traction).
Elia hub assets static
The 38 named hubs that anchor Elia's open data on physical flows (opendata.elia.be ods124) . Plotted as glowing points.
Hub ambient pulse ambient
Once the map is ready, all 38 hubs gently breathe — a slow opacity cycle on the underlying glow layer — so the network feels alive even when no row is selected. Line styling stays static; there is no per-line linear pulse.
Selected flow dynamic
When a row in the flows table is clicked, the matching from/to hubs glow brighter and the segment is drawn as a neon line with a bidirectional pulse and a floating label showing the two hubs, average MW and average % loading over the selected window.
Selected planned outage dynamic
When a row in the maintenance table is clicked, the outage's two hubs are circled with a pulsing red halo and a floating label shows the asset and date range. Transformer-only outages with no coordinates don't draw on the map.
